Description

The Cluny Museum of medieval artifacts is built on the site of an ancient Roman thermal bath. Unfortunately, the baths were destroyed in the 3rd century during the Barbarian invasions. The Cluny Benedictines bought the land to put up a mansion in 1330. Jacques d'Amboise built the current building between 1485 and 1498. The mansion lodged abbots as well as housing papal nuncios nin the 17th century. In the 19th century, after having taken some damage during the Revolution, the building was turned into a museum. It is one of the few real remnants of the Middle Ages left in Paris. The Cluny museum contains a number of important works of art dating from the Middle Ages.
